Golden Valley Tax Preparer Facing Felony Tax Charges

The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced today that a Golden Valley tax preparer was charged in Hennepin County Court with five felony counts of failure to file tax returns, five gross misdemeanor counts of failure to file tax returns, and five felony counts of failure to pay tax.

SAINT PAUL, Minn., April 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced today that a Golden Valley tax preparer was charged in Hennepin County Court with five felony counts of failure to file tax returns, five gross misdemeanor counts of failure to file tax returns, and five felony counts of failure to pay tax.

An investigation by the department found that 54-year-old Steven Allen Schleif, co-owner of a St. Louis Park accounting firm, Kopischke, Schleif & Company, Ltd, allegedly failed to file and pay individual income tax returns for the years 2001 through 2005. According to the complaint, Schleif altered his social security number on tax returns he prepared to avoid the attention of state and federal investigators.

The last Minnesota tax return Schleif voluntarily filed was for tax year 1999. Schleif declared he was a professional gambler to claim his gambling losses as business expenses, reducing his net income and tax due. The Revenue Commissioner and Minnesota Tax Court denied his claim and determined he owed the state more than $6,000 in unpaid taxes and interest for tax year 1999.

According to the complaint, the Department of Revenue tried several times to get Schleif to file and pay his state income taxes for 2001 through 2005, but he did not do so until last year, when he learned that he was under criminal investigation.

Schleif again claimed to be a professional gambler on his individual income tax returns for 2001 through 2005. However, no detailed records or logs of any gambling business were found during a search of his apartment.

The department said the amount of net income and tax due to the state was significantly understated in returns Schleif filed for tax years 2001 through 2005.

Each felony count is punishable by a maximum of five years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is dedicated to enforcing tax laws and collecting no more and no less than taxpayers owe. The department takes progressively stricter measures against taxpayers who demonstrate that they will not voluntarily meet their obligations.
