ACU Calls for Rejection of the 'No Energy' Bill
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Conservative Union has called on Congress to reject proposed energy legislation it says would "threaten to set the U.S. back decades in energy cost and availability" and called on President Bush to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.
ACU Chairman David A. Keene said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's bill would simultaneously raise taxes and future electric rates while slamming the brakes on domestic oil and gas production.
"It's hard to imagine energy legislation that could combine more bad ideas than the Pelosi bill," Keene said. "It's an energy bill that does nothing for America's future energy needs. Should Pelosi force the bill through the House, the Senate should have the good sense to reject it and should it reach the president's desk, the veto pen should be ready."
Keene pointed out that Pelosi has insisted on putting back in the bill tax increases and mandates on the use of renewable energy for electric power that the Senate has already rejected.
Keene said on top of massive tax increases to discourage oil and gas production, the bill mandates that fuel producers use biofuel technology that does not now exist and imposes another tax if they can't acquire it.
Keene also noted there is something completely missing from the bill -- nuclear power.
"Although it is obvious that nuclear power is part of the answer to reduce our long-term dependence on fossil fuels, Pelosi has caved in to the left-wing ideologues in her caucus and kept it out of the bill. Congress should scrap this monstrosity, go back to the drawing boards and write a bill that stops punishing the American people for their high standard of living and provides incentives for an increase in all forms of energy to meet our future needs."
