Tubbs Jones Votes to Provide Tax Relief to the Middle-Class

WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones joined a majority of her Democratic colleagues in voting in favor of H.R. 399, the Temporary Tax Relief Act of 2007. This legislation includes provisions that provide Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) relief and extend a number of popular tax provisions set to expire this year. It also includes an increased refundable child credit and a deduction for property taxes paid by homeowners. She released this statement.

"I am extremely pleased that the House today chose to put middle class families first by voting in favor of the Temporary Tax Relief Act. This tax measure provides relief for the 23 million Americans who otherwise would be saddled with the onerous alternative minimum tax. In addition to fixing this mole-hill that has become a tax mountain for millions of Americans, it will provide relief for 7.4 million low-income workers by increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit.

"Additionally, we are enabling more than 6.5 million working families to use the refundable Child Tax Credit, allowing more families to remove themselves from the depths of poverty. This legislation is helping Americans help themselves. It is okay to ask people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, but if they don't have boots, we are asking too much.

"This Democratic-led House remains committed to providing millions of middle-class families with tax cuts and help grow our economy without increasing the national debt. Tax fairness can be achieved in a fiscally responsible way by closing unfair loopholes that allow a privileged few to avoid paying their fair share of taxes and passing more debt on to future generations. The Temporary Tax Relief Act is sound legislation, progressive tax policy and the right direction for America."
